Ohio State adds four more standouts to 2009 recruiting class
COMMENT: What do you think of the OSU recruiting class?
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
COLUMBUS — Ohio State has landed four more coveted players in the 2009 recruiting class — including two top-100 national prospects — giving the program 22 verbal commitments among seniors-to-be.
Bolstering an already loaded class, cornerback Justin Green of Louisville, Ky., and fullback Carlos Hyde of Naples, Fla., committed Sunday, while cornerbacks Corey Brown of Monroeville, Pa., and Bradley McDougald of Dublin, Ohio, came on board Monday.
"Right now, it's the No. 1 class in the country and I don't see it falling out of the top five," said Bucknuts.com recruiting analyst Duane Long.
Green (5-11, 178), a state sprint champion, is the sixth-ranked cornerback nationally and 67th-best player overall, according to Rivals.com. He also played wide receiver and running back and racked up 2,000 all-purpose yards.
His brother, Marcus Green, was a standout defensive tackle for the Buckeyes and still lives in Columbus.
Hyde (6-1, 240) is the second-ranked fullback in the nation but is more than just a blocking back, having rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last season. He turned down offers from Florida, Florida State and Miami.
Brown (6-1, 180) is rated as the fifth-best "athlete" nationally and is the 73rd-ranked player overall. He had offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and Pitt.
McDougald (6-1, 181) stars at Dublin Scioto High School and had offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa.
OSU has gotten a surge in early commitments. That's been attributed to recruits fearing there would be no scholarships available should they wait.
The Buckeyes are still in the running for other top prospects and could sign as many as 28 under a new Big Ten rule, but they'd have to get down to the NCAA maximum of 25 before the start of fall practice in 2009.
If they go over the limit, they'd have to juggle their numbers by having some players grayshirt (delay their enrollment by a year) or hope some graduate early from high school and enter OSU in time to be counted in the 2008 class.
"It's a lovely problem to have," Long said, "and I imagine the (OSU) coaches feel pretty confident in what these players are going to do to continue to be recruiting as hard as they are."
Henton makes transfer official
Quarterback Antonio Henton transferred from OSU and enrolled in classes at Georgia Southern on Monday. He'll have three years of eligibility left.
The Eagles, who are coming off a 7-4 season, play in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) and are looking for a starting QB after the departure of Jayson Foster, who won the Walter Payton Award as the best offensive player in that division as a senior last season.

con’t like we do most our season. Pick one team SEC1 and stick with them.. I like the AFC better than the NFC but there are 16 TEAMS IN EACH CONFERENCE. In the Florida game there were allot of bad calls on both sides so quit your bitching. We won end of story. When you decide to pick ONE team I might gain some respect for you but until then your just another hater that can’t stand OSU and the quality program we have.

Here’s the thing gentlemen, you’ll note that allot of these post of buckeye fans have buckeye or osu or something in the their moniker while SEC1 roots for a conference not a team!! SEC1 needs to pick a team and stay with it! The Florida game was a blowout but atleast it was on a neutral field, a warm neutral field but neutral none the less. LSU had an hour bus ride and the game was in the dome. I would like to see the warm blooded SEC bring thier butts up north and play in the cold

hey superbuttfan08, that is my point, moron…osu should strive to play in bowl games like the Alamo Bowl; less pressure to fold under, playing against teams similar to the big ten schools in style (ie..SLOW)stay away from BCS bowlsat all costs. you won the miami game because of a bad call; you got your azzez handed to you when the bigboys from FLORIDA and LSU stepped on your throats. Once Les Miles realized your prized reciever corps could easily be handled in single coverage, the rout was on.

SEC1, you my friend are a moron. Ohio State won the alamo bowl. Please try not to post more idiotic remarks about Ohio States record if you don’t know jack about them.

Even out here on the left coast, I hear about a linebacker from Miami Trace, Ohio (Art Schlister country) named Nathan Williams being signed reportedly with OSU. if so, why isn;t he listed on 2009 recruitment posted on this website? Or is he from a previous year’s signing-I hear he’s only a freshman coming this Fall. Also, he reportedly is big and plenty fast (runs a 4.4) and could well play other positions. As its hard around here to find Ohio high school news, etc., I rely on Ohio news source

It’s all a numbers game! The SEC recruits among a handful of other universities, primarily in the south. The Buckeyes recruit against every major football power coast to coast and north to south. I think basically every potential football recruit in the south is conditioned to not leave the area. The same doesn’t hold true for other areas of the country as witnessed by the rosters of the major football programs.

yeah, yeah, yeah…whatever. Only January matters, and OSU has proven in January…they suck. Think Alamo Bowl, losers. SEC RULES…little ten is for fools…

Unreal. At this time last year, OSU had 8 recruits compared to 23 this year. And don’t worry too much about ratings. AJ Hawk was a 3 star as was James Laurinitis and Antonio Pittman. Nick Mangold was a 1 star! No other coaching staff develops players like Jim Tressel’s.

The SEC has been doing this for years, Florida, LSU and Tenn all overload their classes because they know not everyone will work out. There is one more that if Tressell lands the SEC will scratch their heads. The top running back in SEC country and in florida has his scholarship in hand, if he wants it. If he does….WOW, this will be one of the best classes ever in the Big Ten.

As true with anything, it’s cyclic. While its true that the SEC is good now, they’ll have their down years, like the Big 10 is experiencing now. But if the Buckeyes keep recruiting like this, they will be contenders on a yearly basis. Even though we lost the last couple, being in the BCS Title game every year ain’t bad!! 117 other teams would love to be in that situation!

I, too am kind of concerned about these early commits - will they stay healty and true to OSU? I don’t see any really really suoerstar players but what I do see is this class being a solid backbone for the Buckeyes for the next few years.

While it’s nice to see Ohio State continue to land highly rated prospects. I’m a bit concerned with their approach of getting verbal commitments so early. All of these players still have their senior season to play and there is always the possibility of injury or a de-commitment. I wouldn’t get too excited until these players prove themselves on the field and sign their names on the dotted line.

On paper, it’s great. But games aren’t won on paper. OSU has had a lot of great recruits before and they didn’t pan out (Zwick, Clarett). I’m most looking forward to the guys experts aren’t salivating over. Coach Tressel always seems to take those types and turn them into studs. If they stay out of trouble and stay healthy great things should happen.

I’m excited about the class but I’m not rushing out to buy a can of brasso for the trophy yet. None of these kids have played a single down in front of 100,000 fans on national TV. If anyone can jell them into a team it would be Coach Tressel. Go Bucks…Beat Michigan is all I want…Every thing else is icing on the cake!

A National Championship caliber recruiting class. The Bucks have redoubled their efforts to find speed, toughness, size and coachable recruits. 5 Stars on all counts…
Nobody knows what the future holds but Ohio State is primed to be a National power for years to come.
